Podd – self-watering planters for outdoor use
Our heller podd is a self-watering planter or plant pot for outdoor use with a water reservoir for on-demand watering.
The podds are newly developed, sustainable planters with a water reservoir, manufactured and distributed in Germany by the brand heller. All containers are double-walled using a special process and are equipped with a clever system that guarantees watering according to the plant’s needs. The plant takes what it needs, no more and no less. No electronics, batteries or anything similar are needed, only physics.
Please pay close attention when choosing the size of the podd.
The size of the pod should always be adapted to the size of the plant you want to plant. The size of the root ball plays an important role in this. To help you as a customer find your way around, we have created a table here that shows you which pod is right for your plant:
| Podd | root ball height | root ball diameter |
| Röder | 20 – 25 cm | Max. to 40 cm Ø |
| Lockwitz | 15 – 20 cm | Max. to 28 cm Ø |
| Promnitz | 9 – 14 cm | Max. to 20 cm Ø |
Please note that the bottom edge of the root ball should not be more than 5 cm above the granules when planting!
It should also be noted that the rubber stopper under the pot should be removed when used outdoors to allow excess rainwater to drain away. Indoors, the stopper should be inserted into the hole:

Simply prepared
Everything is so easily prepared that you don’t need to worry about the system. Planting is done just like with any other pot.
Then fill the reservoir, continue watering for a while, and then watch it grow.

Thinking sustainably
Heller pods are designed with sustainability in mind from the very beginning. A closed-loop system aims for 100% reuse of raw materials.
Water efficiency
Because the system delivers the water directly to the roots, loss through evaporation is minimal. Everything that is added reaches the plant.
The water remains in the double-walled reservoir, and only the amount taken up by the plant flows in.
Certified procedure
The system has been tested over the long term and has now reached a level that guarantees absolute operational reliability.
Special suitability for outdoor use
The integrated irrigation system is completely separate from the water supplied to the ground from outside. If you place the Heller podd outdoors, the plug in the bottom must be removed. This ensures that excess water can drain away. Once additional rainwater, for example, has been used up, the system resumes normal operation.
Watering autonomy
The extended period during which the plant is nourished by its container without additional care is what we call watering autonomy. Depending on the type of plant and its location, this can last up to twelve weeks or more, during which no one needs to worry about watering. The advantage is particularly obvious for professional users. Less effort for watering means fewer trips, lower costs… But private users will also quickly appreciate the benefit. Even very long vacations can be enjoyed without worrying about your beloved plants.
Designed to be recyclable
Design and product development are optimized for recycling processes that take place after the product’s use. Upon return, the pot is completely reintroduced into the cycle and used 100% as raw material for new production.
The base material PE can be formed into the next shape without loss. Any additional filters and filling tubes are simply removed beforehand.
Planting instructions and care information
Note before you begin: You will need sufficient suitable potting soil.

#1 -Preparation
Decide whether the pot should be placed outdoors or indoors. For outdoor placement, first remove the plug from the bottom of the container and store it next to it in the designated holder.
If the container is brought indoors for overwintering, the stopper must be reinserted.

#2 - Pour in granules
Fill the container with clay granules so that the bottom and wicks, including the overflow, are evenly covered.

#3 - Planting
Now plant your green darling in the pot with suitable commercially available potting soil.

#4 -Add water
Then the reservoir in the double-walled container is filled.

#5 - Watering in the initial phase
Initially, the plant needs a little extra care until the roots have developed. Therefore, water it sparingly from above for about two months.

#6 -Enjoy watering freedom
From then on, water will only be added via the filling opening at the top.
Depending on the type of plant and its location, it can go up to 12 weeks without watering. Please refer to the water level indicator!

#7 - Overwintering indoors
If we bring the container indoors for overwintering, the plug described at the beginning must be reinserted into the bottom of the container.

#8 - Overwintering outdoors
If the plant is to overwinter outdoors, be sure to drain the water from the reservoir before the first frost. Simply pull out the plug at the bottom of the container.
